Salt Archipelago: History and Archaeology of Salt Cultivation and Harvesting in the Caribbean
摘要
This chapter offers the first overview of the history and archaeology of salt extraction and production in the Caribbean. First, the history of salt exploitation from early colonial times to the present is offered, providing a broad coverage of salinas throughout the entire Caribbean region regardless of linguistic barriers and colonial frontiers. This is followed by summaries of the various archaeological investigations that have focused on pre-colonial, colonial-, and republican-period salt cultivation and harvesting in the Caribbean. The chapter closes with a series of pointers for future archaeologies of salt in the Caribbean.
