This chapter provides a professional and personal profile of Jewish women architects in pre-State Israel (Eretz Yisrael; Mandatory Palestine 1920–1948). Given the striking similarity of their life stories and professional careers, it is possible to create a “group biography” of their varied and innovative work. Their work is put into a larger comparative context by examining the status of German, British, and American women architects, their design fields, family status, and opportunities for professional advancement in light of the social, political, and cultural conditions in each country. The disparities highlight the exceptional integration of women into the Eretz Yisrael architectural community and the wide range of projects they designed.
