The chapter explores the social, cultural, health, and technological ideas reflected in the formal and spatial aspects of European modern architecture. The focus is on the development of domestic design in the Weimar Republic and pre-State Israel (Eretz Yisrael; Mandatory Palestine 1920–1948) through a discussion of the New Household discourse. The influence of this discourse on modern architecture in Eretz Yisrael is examined along with the social processes underlying the ideas of the New Woman and the New Dwelling.
