摘要

Where humanity is nowadays facing fundamental challenges, covered by the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and range from poverty to health issues and global warming in addition to poor education and inequalities, to name but a few, pressures are even more exerted to provide relevant sustainability development solutions. Thinkers, scientists, world leaders, professional bodies, and other sources have driven interdisciplinary approaches towards forming common strategies to meet the increasing, and fast-emerging, global threats. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are considered to play the key role in providing sustainable curricula and educating tomorrow’s professionals to lead humanity towards peace, growth, and prosperity. Where this happens by means of enforcing Quality Assurance (QA), the concept of accreditation tends to be an official mechanism for formal recognition. When connected with the national priorities of the nation and strengthened by the support of the official authorities, both HEIs and the accrediting agencies turn out to be the vehicles that drive towards sustainability institutions and society. Such is the case of Oman where its higher education system drives development for sustainability and sustainability again for non-stop development with the tool of accreditation to play a key role in assuring the quality of the endeavor and its nobility as well. While tracing the historical evolution of the accrediting body in the Sultanate, this qualitative paper expands on the interconnections between accreditation, national priorities, and sustainability.
