This introductory chapter offers broad historical and political context to the situation that superstore workers find themselves in today. Popular texts on working-class culture, including Ben Hamper and JD Vance, are considered to situate the culture that these workers find themselves in. Popular academic texts on the oligarchic nature of US government are considered from the fields of economics and political science. Considering sociological and ethnographic accounts of worker disobedience introduces the topic of the increasing ubiquity of foot-dragging, pilfering, and desertion in the modern workplace. Infrapolitical perspectives from James C. Scott and Robin D.G. Kelley begin to offer a framing for understanding the resistance narratives that inform these worker’s daily political activities. The nature of this study in terms of its research design, methodology, and outlines is also explained.
