Things are relatively straightforward for historians, as they know the outcomes of various conflicts and, with the benefit of hindsight, can more easily identify the vested interests concealed from people at the time. Thus, historical interpretations generally assume that well before the year 1546, Emperor Charles V[aut]Charles V had been systematically preparing for decisive military solutions to quell opposition within the realm. This seems logical, especially considering that Charles V himself supposedly states the same in his memoirs. So, why should we doubt him?
