The purpose of this chapter is to provide four case studies of international joint universities in the Middle East. They include the German University in Cairo, one of the earliest established international joint universities; the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology; the German University of Technology in Oman; and the German Jordanian University. While Germany is a co-founding partner for three of them, it is revealing to see the differences in co-governance, funding, and joint academic programs. For example, the German University in Cairo has built its own industrial park and has a branch campus in Berlin. The host partner for the German University of Technology in Oman is a private company named Oman Education Services, and the German Jordanian University has developed innovative double degree and exchange programs to promote cultural exchanges for students from both partner countries. An important common feature is the emphasis on developing increased research capacity and output through joint applied research with local industries located in both partner countries. The case studies showcase the diversity of international joint university priorities and practices while sharing the signature features of being co-founded, co-funded, and jointly governed and reinforcing their shared goal of fostering international cooperation in education, research, and innovation.
