This chapter examines what seems to be the ever-changing landscape of international academic mobility and uses four analytical frameworks to discuss different categories and types of international academic mobility. The first framework illustrates the evolution from the traditional form of people mobility to the contemporary context where higher education programs, providers, projects, and policies are also moving across jurisdictional borders. The second framework focuses on different characteristics of the program and provider mobility categories and clarifies that international joint universities and regional universities are examples of collaborative higher education institutions, not independent ones like international branch campuses. The third framework classifies the various types of international universities into four categories and situates international regional and joint universities in the co-founded group, not in the satellite or foreign-named groups. The differences between the use of international higher education, research, and innovation in a knowledge diplomacy approach and knowledge for soft power approach in international relations are highlighted in the fourth framework and positions regional and international joint universities within the knowledge diplomacy approach. This detailed review of new developments in the broad field of international academic mobility, accompanied by four analytical frameworks, provides the necessary foundation and context to study the phenomena of regional universities and international joint universities.
