Solitary confinement is a strange type of punishment—if it can be considered punishment. Other than locking the offender away, what function does it serve, what are the benefits, if any? These questions merit our attention, particularly given the high number of people affected by this practice. It calls for careful consideration, thus the focus of this chapter’s inquiry.
