Heart transplantation is a surgical procedure that represents the replacement of a diseased heart with end-stage heart failure, with a healthy heart from a brain-dead donor organism. Today, heart transplantation, due to its results, represents an unanimously accepted clinical treatment option for patients with end-stage heart failure, where all other therapeutic options have been exhausted. However, the availability of donor hearts limits the number of heart transplant operations performed worldwide.
