As ultrasonographic technologies have continued to improve, prenatal ultrasound has become a routine part of prenatal care, particularly with the establishment of the routine fetal anatomy scan between 18 to 20 weeks gestational age. This increased clarity of imaging has strengthened the ability to diagnose fetal malformations accurately and quickly, allowing for preparation for treatment in the postnatal period and even occasionally in the prenatal period. Potential prenatal ultrasonographic findings include but are not limited to fetal growth restriction, oligohydramnios, placental or umbilical cord abnormalities, central nervous system malformation, cardiac and chest defects, GI anomalies, skeletal impairment, and fetal hydrops. While congenital malformations can exist in isolation, many occur in conjunction with other defects, chromosomal abnormalities or syndromes, and thus prenatal diagnosis may require further workup with fetal imaging and genetic testing. Prognoses vary given the wide array of severities both between and within different abnormalities.
