Prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM) is defined as rupture of membranes prior to the onset of labor and can occur in both term and preterm pregnancies. There is no single best option for the assessment and management of patients with preterm and term PROM. Management decisions are best determined based on gestational age in conjunction with close consideration of the maternal and fetal risks of prolonging a pregnancy versus moving towards delivery.
