The Effect of Work Stress and Well-Being on Employee Engagement Among Secondary School Teachers in Subang Jaya, Selangor: Mediating Role of Social Support

This study aims to explore the relationship between work stress and well-being on employee engagement among secondary school teachers at Subang Jaya Selangor, with the mediating role of social support. In the high-stress environment of secondary education, teachers often face significant work stress, which can adversely affect their overall well-being and, in turn, their level of engagement. Stress and stress-related complaints such as fatigue and depression among teachers are common globally, including in Malaysia. The current understanding of the connection between teachers’ stress and well-being within a school is still limited. This study emphasizes the significance of managing work-related stress and well-being as factors that impact employee engagement. It also seeks to explore how work stress and well-being influence employee engagement, as well as how social support can mitigate negative outcomes among all secondary school teachers in Subang Jaya. The independent and dependent variables in this study align with the criteria of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They focus on work stress and well-being, which aligns with SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 8, and Employee Productivity, which is a cross-cutting theme influenced by the aforementioned factors and is essential for sustainability economic growth (SDG 8). The respondents were collected from teachers at the secondary school in Subang Jaya, Selangor. As for methodology, primary data was collected from a sample of 110 teachers working in a secondary school, Subang Jaya, using a survey as an instrument. The collected data was then analyzed using SPSS. The findings revealed that work stress and wellbeing significantly influenced employee engagement in the education sector. The findings also revealed social support emerged as a critical mediator in the relationship between work stress and well-being towards employee engagement.
