Building a New Data Center for AI Applications in High Energy Physics and Astrophysics and in the Digital Humanities

At the University of Naples “Federico II,” we are building a new data center for AI applications, mainly in high energy physics and astrophysics but also for other scientific applications, including emerging fields like the digital humanities. In total, about 100 servers have been installed in July 2024 and are now being configured; all of them are equipped with plenty of RAM memory and they share 10 PByte of storage. About 40 servers mount 2x nVidia H100 GPU’s, and 15 servers mount 2x nVidia L40/L40S GPU’s. Particular attention has been put on the network system, which consists of four different subsystems, using both Ethernet and InfiniBand protocols. First applications, which use the prototype part of the new data center, are illustrated. Astrophysics applications concern the analysis of large (30 Gbytes) images acquired from ground-based and satellite telescopes, with multiwavelength approach to the study of the re-ionization epoch of the galaxy-AGN coevolution. In the field of digital humanities, we have acquired hi-res images of about 200 manuscripts of Divina Commedia, maintaining several image formats, including FITS, and operating bleed-through removal via AI.
