A Web Platform for Documentation and Feedback on Learning in Design Education
摘要
This study presents DesignEDU, a web-based system developed to facilitate support and improvement of learning among students of design courses of digital fabrication education. The DesignEDU system aims to offer an extensive documentation architecture with continuous feedback during the prototyping process. The system answers the demand for a single-point solution that is easy to use, flexible, and affordable, which meets the unique needs of digital fabrication courses in the context of makerspaces and FabLabs. We examine different documentation tools created to foster educational ideas in design development and prototyping. These systems informed the development of DesignEDU. A distinct feature implemented in the system is AI-generated summaries aiming to accelerate issue identification and feedback. The system was deployed and used for documentation in a BSc digital fabrication course. Quantitative analysis shows that student feedback shows the platform’s strengths, while qualitative feedback gives useful insights into the user experience and suggests ways to improve the platform. The platform has achieved its primary objectives of providing support and enhancing communication and feedback among students and instructors, with AI-powered features demonstrating particular promise in streamlining content summarization and offering potential for personalized learning experiences.
