The purpose of the study is to re-examine the strategic fit of Russian higher education organizations with the digital context based on identify the strategic type of universities by Miles and Snow typology. The research methodology is based on a simple mixed method using an online survey of heads of Russian universities. The survey was compiled using dynamics of value creation-appropriation (VCA) approach based on an analysis of strategic programs for the support and development of higher education organizations, as well as a study of university strategies until 2030. To identify the strategic type of the university, a connection was established between the priority list of stakeholders and their positions in the Gurkov-Obel conceptual model. The results of the study confirm the hypothesis that the strategic orientation of under study universities misfit to the turbulent external environment. This study is the first to attempt to practically measure and identify Miles and Snow’s strategic type using the Gurkov-Obel conceptual dynamic model for higher education organizations in a digital context. The methodological approach presented in this study is useful for university leaders to implement a digital transformation strategy through achieving strategic fit to the external environment and the system of relationships with supplying key resources stakeholders.
