This chapter explores domestic comfort as experienced by the rank-and-file soldiers of the Napoleonic empire in military accommodation, with a focus on barracks. By centring the analysis on the soldiers, using archival documents and ego-documents related to the Kingdom of Italy, it endeavours to understand how early nineteenth-century ideas of domestic comfort, and the state’s ability to provide it, influenced the making of healthy and safe military housing.
