The Prussian-Saxon defeat at Jena and Auerstedt in October 1806 and its aftereffects, including the French occupation of Prussia from 1806 to 1808, were a central theme of German historiography until 1945. The “debacle” of this defeat in the fourth coalition war against Napoleon was the focus of the national myth of the “uprising of Germany” in the “Wars of Liberation” of 1813-15. The paper analyzes the different contemporary experiences and perceptions of the defeat and the subsequent occupation and discusses the aftermath in the contested collective memories.
