This opening chapter is used to contextualise the inclusive education movement against a backdrop of a changing and unpredictable world. Climate change, rising inequality, and the proliferation of artificial intelligence are presented as key global challenges that demand our most urgent attention. Education that is engaging and inclusive, celebrates diversity, and prepares students for the complex challenges they will face in later life is framed as our best tool for tackling these challenges and for making the world a better and a fairer place. But, first, we must acknowledge that it is currently designed in a way that is fundamentally exclusive; in its current form, it benefits neither students nor wider societies. In our overly standardised education systems, systems that promote the memorisation of information, conformity, and competition, only a small number of students can, by definition, succeed. Furthermore, these systems do much to stamp out natural diversity and constrain creativity and critical thinking. As such, this chapter presents inclusive education not simply as a way to support students that have been historically marginalised (though this is, of course, important), but as an opportunity to make education more engaging and more relevant for all students. The chapter concludes with an introduction to the book—its structure, content, and key arguments.
