This chapter summarizes the main themes. Applied science has a weaker position but is as important for society as basic science, even though the latter is much more popular than the former. Most of the examples and discussions are based upon the Swedish situation but are probably applicable to most countries. Failures as well as successes are described. Perhaps the most important conclusion is that we need to increase knowledge about what applied research is and how it works.
