This introductory chapter presents the basic concepts of a discussion regarding trust in applied science. First, all scientists have moral obligations, as has been pointed out several times by previous generations of scientists. However, researchers, their pupils, practitioners benefiting from the research findings, and those in society who provide the financial and administrative framework all have a responsibility. The interaction between scientists and society is of fundamental importance.
