What are the attitudes of teachers towards the shift to EMI? Using a quantitative approach, the study surveys 120 higher education content teachers. Findings revealed that while most teachers are aware of the importance of EMI integration, they expressed their concerns about its adoption in their classes. The findings provide insights into facilitating a smoother transition to EMI in Algerian universities.

摘要

With the increasing debate on the language of instruction in tertiary education, English-medium instruction is gaining ground in universities around the world. Like many non-native English-speaking countries, the Algerian Higher Education sector has been affected by globalization during the last decades. To adapt to the global university system, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research has mandated subject matter instructors deliver their lectures in English starting from September 2023. This abrupt shift has led to misconceptions and challenges among instructors who are required to shift from Arabic and/or French to English. This paper explores the current state of the implementation of English as a medium of instruction in Algerian universities by examining subject matter experts’ attitudes toward this transition.
