This chapter deals with the design of various type of damswhich are used with SHPs. Dams of small height are sometimes constructed to acteither as a diversion structure or as a storage dam where water after powergeneration is normally used for other purposes. The dams are either concretegravity type or of embankment type. Sometimes composite dams are made in whichthe spillway in the river channel is of concrete and rest of river section isblocked by earthen embankment. This chapter deals with the layout and designaspects of concrete gravity dam and also of various types of embankment damssuch as earth fill and rockfill type. Besides structural design, i.e. stabilityunder loads acting on it, hydraulic design aspects are also described. Designfeatures of foundation treatment, river diversion arrangements and seepagecontrol in dams and foundations are also dealt herein.
