Brazilian Higher Education Institutions have, since their inception, been committed to educating citizens through teaching, research, and extension activities, including sustainable development of the planet as one of the cross-cutting themes. This study examines the case of a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in the State of Santa Catarina, which, within its engineering courses, develops scientific research practices focused on circular economy and sustainability. The proposal involves using the banana leaf as a substitute for MDF in partnership with a banana producers association in the Municipality of Corupá, a location near the HEI being studied. This intervention is relevant for the Corupá Banana Growers Association as it opens up new market opportunities and adds value to their product. By finding alternative uses for the residue, the association can diversify its offerings and enhance the value of its production, economically benefiting farmers. Additionally, this approach strongly aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 of the 2030 Agenda, which aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns. The use of the banana leaf not only promotes the value of a local resource, benefiting banana growers, but also contributes to reducing the environmental impact associated with the production of conventional materials like MDF.
