Universities are tackling the challenges brought on by extreme weather events, which are increasingly disrupting lives and necessitating community adaptation and mitigation efforts. Through their research, teaching, and outreach initiatives, universities are central to efforts that enhance resilience, lower carbon emissions, and equip societies to navigate the complexities of a changing climate. Thus, this paper aims to investigate climate action initiatives at a higher education level, exploring the role of universities in promoting climate action through their actions and practices, highlighting the multifaceted approaches that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future. Drawing upon sources including academic literature and institutional reports, the paper examines key areas such as carbon reduction targets, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainable transportation, waste reduction and recycling programs, curriculum integration, research, and innovation. Through an analysis of the actions developed by the three more sustainable universities of the UI GreenMetric ranking of each continent, the paper identifies strategies for effective climate action, highlighting the importance of institutional commitment to the issue. The results show that universities are developing several initiatives that contribute to advancing climate action efforts in universities and global efforts to mitigate climate change.
