This article examines the performance of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Brazil during the initial phase of the research “Diagnosis of knowledge, commitment, and contributions of HEIs to the Agenda 2030,” conducted by the Observatorio de la Sustentabilidad en la Educación Superior de América Latina y el Caribe (OSES-ALC). The data collection form developed by OSES-ALC covers five areas: governance and participation, teaching and training, research and technology, outreach or social projection and campus management. This tool allows HEIs to conduct self-assessments and provides guidance on areas for improvement. Fifty HEIs participated in this research from Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Venezuela. It is noteworthy that Brazil contributed the highest number of responses, totaling 18 HEIs. The results in each of the mentioned areas are analyzed, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of Brazilian HEIs regarding knowledge, commitment, and contributions to the Agenda 2030. Furthermore, based on the primary bibliographic references on the subject, several opportunities for improvement are identified for Brazilian HEIs.
