Proposal for Simulations and Active Learning Methodologies in Environmental Education

This chapter explores the integration of simulations into higher education curricula to teach sustainability and engage students in practical tasks that mirror real-world challenges. The main objective of this chapter is to propose a simulator model that provides learning of content related to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while empowering students to develop problem-solving skills and critical thinking. It highlights the use of active learning methodologies, including the use of simulators, as effective tools for teaching sustainability and ESG principles to digital natives. The research focuses on the key elements that should be incorporated into a simulator to make it effective in empowering students to deal with challenges related to ESG and SDGs. Integrating simulators into higher education provides students with practical experiences, enhancing their understanding and application of sustainable concepts. Research with students revealed the need for environmental education and ESG topics to be more present in the curriculum, and not only in a theoretical manner, but also practically. In summary, this work proposes that the simulator provides practical experiences, allowing students to learn not only in theoretically but also in practically, enabling them to effectively apply sustainable concepts in real-world situations.
