The changes in sedimentary dynamics on the Brazilian coast in recent decades are notable, particularly as the increase in coastal erosion. The evidence points to natural causes and anthropic impacts, intensifying erosion processes and resulting in environmental and socioeconomic risks in many coastal communities. Many city governments are implementing engineering works, such as beach nourishment, to mitigate these impacts. Unfortunately, several projects have exacerbated the situation instead of resolving it. In this sense, coastal studies are essential for understanding sedimentary dynamics and their consequences, especially in coastal communities that live and depend on marine resources. Since 2017, the research team of the Postgraduate Program in Geochemistry at Universidade Federal Fluminense has been conducting geoenvironmental research on the coast of the state of Espírito Santo. These studies have enabled the research team to engage with local communities through collaborative assessments of environmental impacts, organizing workshops, and participating in technical committees established to assess beach nourishment projects. This interaction has increased the participation and engagement of the community members, providing access to technical and scientific knowledge about their environment. These experiences confirm the urgent need to strengthen the involvement of universities with communities, aiding in understanding the causes of environmental processes and seeking effective solutions.
