Diagnosis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Mitigation Strategies at the State University of Campinas to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions

Considering the global impacts of high emissions of gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, which are the main causes of the greenhouse effect, the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) is committed to campus sustainability through actions by entities such as the Sustainable University Management Group (GGUS), the Executive Board for Integrated Planning (DEPI), the Sustainability Coordination (CSUS), the Sustainable Campus Office, and the São Paulo Center for Energy Transition Studies (CPTEn). This article aims to present a diagnosis of UNICAMP's main greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as the first step in developing a Net-Zero Plan consisting of integrated actions for mitigation and adaptation related to energy and transport. UNICAMP's GHG inventory followed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports and the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program guidelines. The main GHG emissions identified were: indirect Scope 3 (Transport and Distribution—2862.97 tCO₂e and Waste Generated in Operations—2575.92 tCO₂e) and indirect Scope 2 (Electricity Consumption—2389.39 tCO₂e). Stationary combustion (natural gas consumption—Scope 1) showed low emissions (0.62 tCO₂e). However, some categories were excluded due to inconsistent data: fugitive emissions and land-use changes. Suggested strategies include conducting energy diagnoses of buildings, diversifying renewable energy use, and conducting annual GHG inventories with continuous monitoring. Developing a comprehensive Net-Zero Plan could guide the university toward carbon neutrality.
