Nigeria has been at the center of violent conflicts for more than two decades. Attacks in communities by armed criminal groups have given rise to mass killings, the burning of houses, the destruction of crops on farmlands and the displacement of residents, amongst others. Huge resources have been committed to addressing this threat. However, the process has been plagued by significant corruption. Funds earmarked for the procurement of military equipment have been embezzled, mismanaged or sometimes diverted into private pockets. Corruption has therefore made it extremely difficult for the Nigerian government to adequately tackle the unending challenge of insecurity. This chapter examines the manifestations of the various components of corruption in Nigeria’s security sector and the human (in)security risks that it poses for the safety of millions of citizens. It also highlights the various dimensions of the link between corruption and human security in order to develop a more effective policy framework for managing insecurity. Data for this chapter were sourced from reports published by government agencies, the media and organizations that keep track of corruption and human security challenges in Nigeria.
