Millions of human beings are recruited, transported, and exploited by smugglers and traffickers through social media platforms worldwide. Tricked by false promises posted on such platforms, migrants arrive in Europe searching for a better life. However, they often end up exploited by traffickers for profit and become victims of abuse by organized criminal groups. Social media, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, accelerated the need for a response at the global and regional levels against the smuggling and trafficking of human beings. This chapter presents an overview of the impact of social media-facilitated smuggling and trafficking of migrants to Europe and explores the legal challenges faced by the European Union (EU) in investigating and prosecuting these crimes. Additionally, after evaluating the relevant regulations, the researchers identify strategies developed by international and regional institutions, including cooperation and partnerships implemented through the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with the EU, and discuss good practices carried out by platform providers to counter this trend. Finally, the research addresses the gap between the existing tools and the increasing challenges created by the social media platforms’ use from a cybercrime perspective, along with the providers’ responsibility to tackle migrant smuggling and trafficking.
