Leak-Before-Break Application to Piping

The leak-before-break (LBB) concept consists in perform an analysis to demonstrate that the leakage monitoring system detects leakage through a circumferential crack, and the plant is shutdown before the unstable crack growth. As a result, it becomes unnecessary to install multiple protective devices designedto withstand rupture loads produced by the loss-of-cooling accident (LOCA) such as pipe-whip restraints and jet-impingement shields. LBB is demonstrated when all requirements in NUREG-1061 and SRP 3.6.3 are met. As an example, the LBB concept is applied to a primary loop piping considering a circumferential throughwall crack under axial and moment loads, both resulting from normal operating and accident conditions. A step-by-step procedure to perform the leakage and crack stability analyses for the LBB is presented. Based on the results it is concluded that the feasibility of LBB is demonstrated for the most application in the nuclear industry.
