Long-Term Monitoring on a New Composite Bridge Girder Based on a Fiber Optic Sensing Textile

Long-term structural health monitoring is crucial for the safety and durability of infrastructure. This study presents the results of a five-year monitoring project on the Grist Mill Bridge in Maine, utilizing a distributed fiber optic sensing system integrated with a specially designed sensing textile. This textile, embedded within the bridge girders and based on Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA), has provided continuous and reliable strain data over the monitoring period. By overcoming traditional installation and reliability challenges, the system has successfully captured the baseline strain distribution, offering valuable insights into the bridge’s structural behavior over time. The modified installation method ensured efficient deployment and consistent data acquisition in confined bridge environments. The extensive data set gathered underscores the importance of long-term monitoring for proactive maintenance and structural integrity assessment. This approach demonstrates the potential of fiber optic sensing textiles for sustained structural health monitoring in critical infrastructure.
