Monitoring Corrosion in Prestressed Tendons: Case Studies, Results, Analysis and Outputs

It is estimated that 70% of reinforced concrete structures will undergo a significant degree of deterioration during their 30-year service life, with corrosion being the primary cause. Concurrently, standards such as Eurocode 2 recommend the implementation of predictive maintenance strategies for infrastructure systems. The monitoring of durability parameters is a crucial step in eliminating uncertainties about corrosion behaviour and enabling true predictive maintenance. This paper presents a novel approach to corrosion monitoring of prestressing tendons. The method is based on a CSIC patent and can be applied to both plastic and metal ducts. The results obtained facilitate the univocal detection of corrosion onset or its temporal behaviour. These results enable the planning of preventive action months or years before failure occurs.
