For buildings exposed to vibrations generated by the transit of trains and heavy vehicles in urban areas, human perception could be the basic parameter in their design by the serviceability limit state. Currently, in order to obtain the operating limit values in various types of buildings, in some recognized building regulations the models of a person’s gait are frequently used as a source of vibration. The purpose of this study is to assess the functionality or deterioration of the floor of a structure when, in addition to a human gait, vehicular traffic is included as a source of external vibration. The experimentation was carried out with the temporary instrumentation of three buildings located in Mexico City (CDMX), two in the downtown area and the other in the south. Following the procedures proposed in the ISO 2631-2 and BS-6472 standards, the data collected were used to evaluate the vibration levels to which the people who work in these buildings are exposed. The results indicate that the vibrations generated by vehicular traffic dominate the records obtained at the different monitored levels, and that the external source should be considered when estimating permissible vibration levels. Additionally, a detailed analysis of the methods used to estimate the operating limit values of steel and reinforced concrete structures included in Mexican regulations (NTC 2023) and other regulations was carried out, which results in considerations on a conceptual model of the use of vehicular traffic as an additional source of vibration.
