Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging: Key Principles of Positive Behavior Support
摘要
Positive behavior support (PBS) offers the opportunity to inform a system of care across the lifespan. Creating environments where humans have the ability to thrive and experience joy is a goal for any individual, from birth through early childhood programs, P-12 school systems, alternative education systems, and adult care. PBS serves as a comprehensive approach to improving social climates and behavioral health across ecosystems (Kincaid et al., 2016). When considering the principles underlying this approach, it is important to clarify that simply providing supports through a one-size-fits-all method, unfortunately, does not consider the varied needs of individuals and can lead to inequitable outcomes. However, intentionally embedding equity, inclusion and belonging into the systems, data and practices of PBS creates possible pathways for more responsive implementation and sustainable outcomes.
