Core Features and Essential Elements
摘要
The focus in Chap. 1 concerning the history of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) helps to appreciate the magnitude of impact this science has made today, such as expanding application from individuals to organizational units such as schools. In this light, the field has evolved considerably over time with respect to the science of behavior, and most specifically PBS. The core features of PBS “comprise a commitment to empirically validated practices that are guided by the values, perspectives, and preferences of those receiving support and embedded in the organizational systems needed to make support comprehensive, durable and effective” (Dunlap et al., 2009, p. 4). Adhering to these features, “holds great promise for improving the quality of life for an increasing number and diversity of people” (Horner et al., this volume, p. 27). Ensuring safe, positive, and productive (i.e., efficient and effective) environments that are sustainable is also necessary for all individuals to achieve maximum benefit, regardless of context. Yet, understanding how to shift from a reactive to a proactive approach is critical in establishing, implementing, and scaling a multi-tiered preventive framework.
