For safe and reliable autonomous driving, it is very important to recognize road surface conditions, particularly on winter road in snow country. In this paper, on-board sensing system by combination of various environmental sensors is proposed to recognize road surface conditions. The sampled sensor signals are processed and recognized by MEC and transmitted to the remote control center to maintain the safe and reliable autonomous driving. This sensing system is used for the actual autonomous driving vehicle as social experiment to evaluate performance of running road in snow country.
