This study explores the current state and future potential of digital archiving for historically and culturally significant materials in public libraries across Ethiopia. We focus on the implementation of the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), an international standard for image presentation, and the transition toward open access to archival data. As part of our preliminary investigation, we conducted a hands-on workshop at the Abrehot Library—Ethiopia’s national library—targeting librarians and university students. Participants practiced book digitization using scanners and learned how to register and publicly share archival data. To evaluate the outcomes of these activities, we organized a research presentation and panel discussion in Addis Ababa, involving stakeholders from government institutions, libraries, universities, and IT companies. This event culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Abrehot Library regarding future digital archive development. Furthermore, a follow-up session was held in Saga City, Japan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and related institutions, to contextualize and assess our findings in a Japanese setting. Through this series of initiatives, we aim to contribute to the strategic development of sustainable digital archiving infrastructure in Ethiopia.
