Semantic Technologies for Automated Representation and Inferencing of Business Processes and Multi-agents System

In an era where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly emerging in several application domains, Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) are emerging as a solution to manage increasing complexities [2]. In parallel, business process management remains critical to optimise operations and improve understanding between technical and non-technical stakeholders. This research explores the intersection between two distinct models: Electronic Institutions (EI), used to structure interactions between agents, and Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), a widely adopted graphical representation for business processes. The objective is to compare and integrate these technologies through semantic annotations to enable automated representations and logical inferences. Through a case study focusing on a virtual auction house, the paper describes the mapping process between EI and BPMN, highlighting structural and conceptual differences. The results demonstrate how semantic annotation not only enriches the understanding of processes, but also improves their interoperability in heterogeneous contexts. Particular attention was also paid to the differences between the two models, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each.
