Suicide is a critical global public health issue, responsible for more than 700,000 deaths each year. Its risk arises from the complex interplay of biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors, including impulsivity, hopelessness, childhood trauma, and exposure to suicidal behaviors. While mental disorders are strongly associated with suicide, not everyone with a mental illness attempts it. Suicide rates vary significantly, with notable disparities among specific populations, such as Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities, and there is a significant gap in research within low- and middle-income countries. This chapter overviews the book’s structure, illustrating how its various sections address the current challenges in suicide research, clinical practice, and prevention. It emphasizes the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical approaches, research findings, and actionable recommendations, underscoring the need for culturally sensitive and inclusive strategies to tackle the global challenges of suicide prevention and postvention.
