This article reassesses the Eurostat classification of High-Tech Manufacturing Industries and Knowledge-Intensive Services (HT-KIS). The current classification ranks enterprises in NACE Rev. 2 at the 2-digit level into eight broad categories. However, a large share of employment and firms are not considered part of HT-KIS. The main objective of this study is to provide a more detailed HT-KIS classification at the 3-digit level—currently available only at the 2-digit level—in order to evaluate the suitability of the existing classification for each sector and propose the partial inclusion of the 183 (3-digit NACE) sectors currently excluded from HT-KIS. The analysis is conducted at the local unit and firm level, relying on employees’ education levels and the share of employees with a STEM degree. Preliminary results indicate that a classification based on the intensity of STEM employees aligns with HT-KIS, albeit with some differences.
