Maternal healthcare services in Zimbabwe have been deteriorating with high cases of maternal mortality rates, leaving women with no trust with the healthcare service providers in the country. Makonde District is amongst the districts in Zimbabwe with few healthcare institutions, making it difficult for women in the district to access maternal healthcare services on time. The study used a qualitative approach. A human rights-based approach framed the study; unstructured one-to-one interviews and observation were used as methods of data collection. The study employed a purposive sampling technique, and the participants were purposively selected from Makonde district. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the findings of the study. The findings of the study revealed that unavailability of sustainable livelihoods, influence of discrimination against women, and the State’s failure to provide adequate maternal healthcare resources contributed to the challenges women of childbearing age encounter in accessing maternal healthcare resources and exercising their rights to maternal healthcare in Makonde district. The researcher concluded that maternal healthcare is crucial to every woman of childbearing age in Makonde district, and it is the State’s obligation to provide for this right without any hindrance. The study strives to change the subject matter of women of childbearing age in Makonde district, thus aiming to reduce challenges women of childbearing age face in accessing maternal healthcare in Makonde district.
