The ability to spin silk is probably the most characteristic trait of spiders. Although some insects (e.g. Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera and Trichoptera) also have the ability to produce silk, silk production is usually a one-time event in their life cycle, e.g. spinning a cocoon shortly before pupation.
