It is possible, perhaps even commonplace to rate the main body of dance music tracks as musically too simple or naïve to invoke or represent meanings that would support a continued interest in listening. Nevertheless, cases of such interest are common enough to surpass explanations based solely on extra-musical factors like marketing, fashion, or even ritual as a social phenomenon. In this text, the author explores the way musical meanings unfold in electronic dance music, synth-pop and their related genres. The idea of text, in the sense it is used in semiotic studies, is repositioned to the context of current pop music. It is argued that considering text a way that extends beyond an individual song or dance track to a larger corpus of music is a motivated and often vital step on the way to musical meanings. This argument is offered as an explanation to the underlying question regarding the potential of a typical dance music track to emotional and perceptual impact despite the obvious plainness involved. The contribution of association as a subjective experience to musical analysis is discussed.
