Balance is vital between different regulatory requirements, including transparency, accessibility for historical purposes, the right to research, long-term preservation of public records, and the protection of personal data. The organisational and technological challenges associated with the long-term maintenance of statistical archives and information databases must be carefully addressed and effectively managed. Strategic archival function within institutional information governance is a valuable tool for the future accessibility of statistical resources, in harmony with the necessary simultaneous protection of data, including personal data. The integration of archival approaches and techniques provides analysis, expertise, methods and solutions for long-term data management, including risk assessment.
