Sex trafficking is a human rights violation and crime in which individuals are coerced, defrauded, or forced to sell sex. Those vulnerable to sex trafficking tend to be young, poor, unemployed, unhoused, LGBTQ+, migrants, disabled, racial or ethnic minorities, experiencing mental illness or substance abuse issues, or come from abusive homes. These vulnerabilities are compounded when individuals are experiencing multiple intersecting vulnerabilities, making some much more likely to be victimized. As a result of sex trafficking, victims experience physical, psychological, financial, social and sexual abuse that have short- and long-term consequences. The TVPA and UN Trafficking Protocol combats sex trafficking through prevention efforts, prosecution, protecting victims, and creating partnerships with other agencies and organizations. In many ways, these interventions have been effective, but are not without criticisms.
