Today, cities account for almost 50% of the world’s population and 80% of the global GDP. These percentages are only expected to grow as more people move into the cities. Urbanization is a source of economic growth and development, but it can also be a source of challenges: overcrowding, disease, pollution, congestion, crime, and inequality (UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Four key challenges facing least developed countries. UN Trade and Development, 2022). If policy makers want to mitigate these risks, they have to engage in smart and sustainable city planning. The United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC), an initiative aimed at helping cities become more sustainable, can provide guidance to city planners who intend to make their cities resilient, sustainable, and inclusive.
