This chapter offers a review of the physics that underlies nuclear weapons, including a description of the discovery and verification of fission, the difference between reactors and bombs, why enriched uranium must be used for a bomb, and the concept of critical mass. All of these considerations had been established when Frisch and Peierls prepared their memorandum.
