On the Eastern side of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), repeated cycles of war and violence have not only been part of many young people’s born and lived experiences, but it has also allowed them to find collective means to respond to this decade-long conflict. In the North Kivu province, in particular, Goma Actif is one of the youth-led collective organizing actions at the front lines of war through humanitarian and peacebuilding efforts on the ground to prevent, protect, and partner with the local population and those who have run from occupied territories. In this chapter, I analyze the narratives of Goma Actif volunteers in relation to the challenges and collaboration strategies they face in their peacebuilding work with the state and the local community they serve. I argue that young people’s everyday peacebuilding practices in Goma embody a collective understanding of peace at the community level, which is necessary when national political conversations are engaged regarding sustainable peace development and security.
